Sayadaw U Khemika was born in 1968 in the village of Sapah Dwin near Sagaing in the Irrawaddy Valley. He became a novice at the age of eleven at the famous Mahagandhayone monastery in Amarapura near Mandalay. There he obtained Dhammācariya in 1996. At the age of 21, he also began intensive meditation practice at the Mahasi Centre in Yangon. In the year 2000, he joined the team of teaching monks at Paṇḍitārāma in Yangon and Hse Main Gone near Bago. In 2002, he was sent to Pyin Oo Lwin to be the director of the local Paṇḍitārāma centre. He accompanied Sayadaw U Paṇḍita on his tours to Nepal in 2006 and California in 2007. Between 2009 and 2012 he was in charge of the meditation centre Tathāgata in San Jose, California. On his return to Burma, he was offered a large piece of land in the wooded hills overlooking the village of Shwe Myint Thar, a remote location half an hour’s drive from Pyin Oo Lwin, where he founded a monastery that serves both as a meditation centre and a school for young novices.
