Rewata Dhamma Mahathera

Dr Rewata Dhamma Mahathera (Revata Dhamma Mahāthera) was born in 1929 in Hinthada, a small town in the Irrawaddy Delta. He was ordained a novice at the age of 12 and a monk at the age of 20. In 1953, he received the title of Sāsanadhaja Sirīpavaradhammācariya, thanks to which he was able to contribute, as a young monk, to the preparations for the Sixth Buddhist Council in Yangon in 1954-6. He was awarded a scholarship in 1956 to continue his studies in India at the Sanskrit University of Benares, where he obtained a master’s degree in 1964, and then at the Hindu University of Benares, where he obtained a doctorate in 1967. He mastered Hindi, translated and commented on the Abhidhammattha saṅgaha and edited the Visuddhimagga with commentary in Hindi. In 1975 he moved to the United Kingdom where he founded the Birmingham Buddhist Vihāra. In 1998 he built the Dhamma Taḷāka Peace Pagoda. Until his death in 2004, Dr. Rewata Dhamma taught Buddhism and vipassanā meditation in various centres in Europe and the United States. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including “A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma” (with Bhikkhu Bodhi), “The First Sermon of the Buddha”, “Emptying the Rose-apple Seat”, etc. He is also the author of many books and articles.
