U Vāseṭṭha

Sayadaw U Vasettha (Vāseṭṭha) was born in 1959 to a Chinese father and a Burmese mother. He grew up in Yangon and was initiated at the age of 12 into the satipaṭṭhāna meditation at the Mahasi centre in Yangon during the master’s lifetime. He was also able to benefit from the guidance of Sayadaw U Paṇḍita at a very early age. In 1984, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Yangon. He then worked as a trader in the city of Taunggyi for eleven years, while practising vipassanā at the same time. In 1994, he became a temporary monk for 20 days at the Paṇḍitārāma centre in Yangon, then a permanent monk a year later. In 2004, Sayadaw U Paṇḍita sent him abroad to lead a three-month retreat at the Sakyamuni Meditation Centre in France. He returned four times between 2005 and 2009. He currently resides in the small temple and meditation centre Pāramī Sāsana that he founded on the heights of Taunggyi, in Pa-O country. There he writes books on Dhamma that he distributes free of charge. He gives a training course in Buddhist culture for children and teaches the satipaṭṭhāna meditation method to everyone.
