Sayadaw U Thuzana (Sujana) was born in 1954 in Indaw, northern Myanmar. At the age of 12, he started meditating with his father (who later also became a monk) in a Mahasi centre. In December 1978, after obtaining a university degree in agricultural sciences, he was ordained bhikkhu at the monastery Paṭhama Gandaryone, in Sagaing. He studied Buddhist scriptures there for twelve years. From 1983 onwards, he also practised meditation in the Mahasi centre in Yangon, and austerities (dhutaṅga) in the forest centre of Taungpulu Sayadaw. From 1990 to 1993, Sayadaw U Thuzana became spiritual assistant head of the Mahasi centre in Sagaing, where he taught meditation and scriptures to monks and nuns. In 1993, he studied at Visudayon Monastery in Mandalay with renowned teachers (including the famous Sayadaw U Aggañāṇābhivaṃsa) as he prepared for the diploma of Dhammācariya, while at the same time taking on leadership roles. From 1998, he practiced at the Paṇḍitārāma forest meditation centre near Bago, under the guidance of Sayadaw U Paṇḍita, before teaching meditation there. From 2003 to 2012, he is director of the Malaysian Buddhist Meditation Centre (MBMC) in Penang, Malaysia. Since 2012 Sayadaw has been running the meditation centre Tathāgata in San Jose, California.
