The venerable Sayadaw U Nandasiddhi was born on 16 July 1960 in Moulmein, Lower Burma and was given the name Maung Tin Hlaing. At the age of 17, he completed his secondary education with honours in mathematics and biology. He also went on a meditation retreat under the guidance of Sayadaw U Paṇḍita who was then director of the Mahasi Meditation Centre in Yangon.
From 1978 to 1981, he studied physics and electronics at the Yangon University of Arts and Sciences and in 1985, after two years of study, he graduated as a lawyer. Having decided to leave the world, Maung Tin Hlaing was ordained in 1988 in Moulmein as Nandasiddhi. He successfully completed his Pali studies at the famous Mahagandayone Monastery in Amarapura, south of Mandalay.
In 1992, U Nandasiddhi passed the exams of Dhammācariya (Dhamma teacher). In 1997, he moved to the Yangon Meditation Centre Paṇḍitārāma and continued his vipassanā meditation training under the guidance of Sayadaw U Paṇḍita, in parallel with his studies.
In 1999 Sayadaw U Paṇḍita sent him to the Santisukhārāma centre in Kota, Malaysia to teach scripture and meditation. He received the title of Sāsanadhajadhammāciriya in 2001. In 2005, he founded the Meditation Centre Nirodhārāma in Perak, Malaysia and opened a branch in Yangon in 2013. Currently he leads meditation retreats in several Asian countries.
